Kristen Bell is catching heat online after an anniversary post to her husband Dax Shepard sparked backlash for what many saw as an insensitive joke.

On October 17, the Frozen actress, 45, shared a sweet photo on Instagram showing one of their daughters hugging Dax tightly. But it wasn’t the picture — it was the caption that drew attention.

Bell wrote:

“Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me, ‘I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.’”

While the line seemed to be Bell’s attempt at humor, many fans didn’t find it funny. The post quickly drew mixed reactions, with critics accusing the actress of making light of domestic violence.

One commenter wrote, “Domestic violence isn’t a joke.” Another added, “Oh wow, that’s a very odd thing to say.” Others echoed the sentiment, with one viral response simply reading, “Screenshotted.”

Following the backlash, Bell limited the comments on her post.

Still, not everyone was offended — some of her celebrity friends came to her defense or played along with the tone. Howie Mandel joked, “He should write for Hallmark.” Zoey Deutch commented, “You guys are the best,” and Mae Whitman quipped, “Only because we’d never let him get away with it.”

As of October 20, Bell and Shepard haven’t publicly responded to the controversy. The couple, who married in 2013, share two daughters — Lincoln (12) and Delta (10).

The post came just days after Kristen walked the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of her Netflix comedy Nobody Wants This. There, she revealed her daughters had opinions about her outfit, saying:

“My kids told me my red dress was too sexy to wear out of the house. They said, ‘You can’t wear that,’ and I said, ‘Watch me.’”

Despite the online backlash, Bell appeared unfazed — sticking true to her quirky humor and confident personality that fans have come to expect from her.
