Comedian and actor Mae Martin is opening up about creativity, connection, and their dream project — and it all happened in a heartfelt (and hilarious) chat with Drew Barrymore.
The Wayward creator joined The Drew Barrymore Show for an emotional and deeply honest interview that covered everything from teenage empathy to Zootopia 2 — and even a Drew-inspired dream project Mae can’t stop thinking about.
Empathy, Growth, and the Next Generation
Early in the conversation, Drew and Mae bonded over what it means to guide and support young people in a rapidly changing world.
“I feel like I’m living in this wild world of all these beautiful young girls I get to be around,” Drew said, referencing her daughters, ages 13 and 12.
Mae responded with heartfelt optimism:
“That generation’s got it figured out. We have to empower them and listen to them because we need them so, so much.”
The two agreed that storytelling has been a form of healing — a way to channel real-life experiences into something meaningful.
“I don’t know what I would have done had I not had an outlet like our jobs,” Drew reflected. “It was cathartic and a blessing.”
Mae nodded, adding, “It’s not a substitute for therapy — but it helps. And I do therapy too.”
Mae’s Dream: A Cabin, Art, and a Drew Barrymore-Level Movie
When Drew asked about Mae’s ultimate dream project, Mae painted a vivid picture.
“My dream is to be in a little cabin by a river doing weird little paintings. There’s a dog — maybe a three-legged dog — and some kids running around,” Mae laughed.
“Then a couple of times a year, I go off to do something creative — like a movie.”
And that dream isn’t far off. Mae recently voiced a hamster character in Zootopia 2, hilariously describing the role:
“I’m in jail and my cellmate is Totora — she’s bouncing me against the wall. It’s wild.”
But Mae’s true creative ambition? To helm a full-length film of their own — something intimate, strange, and deeply human.
When Drew mentioned Grey Gardens, Mae lit up.
“I’m obsessed with Grey Gardens,” Mae admitted. “For years, I said my dream project would be to do a scripted miniseries based on it. You did it so perfectly — it’s beautiful.”
Drew smiled, clearly touched: “You should. You really should.”
Small Talk? Not for Mae and Drew
The interview ended with a playful twist — Drew’s “rapid-fire” questions that somehow went surprisingly deep.
“Dim sum or birthday cake?”
“Dim sum,” Mae replied immediately.
“Forgiveness or blissful ignorance?”
“Forgiveness.”
“Is time linear?”
“I don’t understand time.”
And finally, Drew asked, “Do you know yourself?”
Mae smiled and answered softly,
“Finally, yes.”
Drew was visibly moved. “The way you work through life is our art to digest,” she said. “You’re amazing — and you surround yourself with icons like Tig and Fortune. That says everything about you.”

A Creative Soul on the Rise
Mae’s hit Netflix series Wayward continues to dominate the streaming charts, landing in the coveted number-one slot — proof that heartfelt, honest storytelling still resonates.
And with Zootopia 2 and a possible Grey Gardens-inspired dream project ahead, Mae Martin’s next chapter looks just as bright — and beautifully unconventional — as they are.
