Breaking News: Matthew Perry Death Case—Doctor Facing 40 Years Amid Emotional Family Statements
LOS ANGELES, CA — The sentencing phase for individuals implicated in the tragic ketamine overdose death of beloved “Friends” star Matthew Perry is underway. The court is grappling with defense arguments for leniency and furious calls for accountability from Perry’s devastated family. Matthew Perry was 54 when he was discovered unresponsive in his hot tub at his Pacific Palisades home.
Vile Allegations and Broken Vows
The powerful victim impact statements delivered by Perry’s family are weighing heavily on the judge, as noted by NBC legal analyst Misty Maris. Matthew’s stepdad, Keith, who was first on the scene, along with his mother, Suzanne, wrote a blistering statement, labeling Dr. Placencia and the other defendants as “jackals.”
They explicitly accused the doctor of shattering his most important vows for mere financial gain:
“This doctor conspired to break his most important vows repeatedly, sneak through the night to meet his victim in secret for what, a few thousand dollars, so he could feed on the vulnerability of our son.”
The family also expressed their profound sorrow that Matthew “didn’t get to have his third act,” emphasizing the immense tragedy of his untimely loss. Matthew’s father, John, and stepmother, Debbie, echoed this pain, stating: “You devastated our family, contributing to the loss of Matthew, our only son.”
Dr. Placencia’s Sentencing Drama
Dr. Placencia, one of the two doctors involved, pleaded guilty in July to distributing large doses of ketamine to Perry before his death.
The doctor was potentially facing up to 40 years behind bars. His defense team is arguing for a suspended sentence, claiming he was not as deeply involved as the “other players” in the case.

However, prosecutors strongly counter that he “capitalized on the vulnerability” of Matthew Perry. They have cited a text message exchange with another doctor as evidence of his monetary motive, in which he asked, “How much do you think this will pay? Let’s find out.”
The “Ketamine Queen” and the Future of the Case
Also facing sentencing is Jasmine Sonia, infamously dubbed the “Ketamine Queen,” who pleaded guilty to supplying the drugs that directly led to Perry’s death. Misty Maris anticipates that Sonia will receive a much harsher sentence than Placencia, as she is facing a maximum sentence of a whopping 65 years behind bars.

The ruling handed down by the judge today will be a crucial forecast for how the court will handle all the other defendants in this case as they approach their pleas
