George Clooney is opening up about love, aging, and the life lessons that have come with both.
In a candid interview on CBS Sunday Morning that aired November 2, the Oscar-winning actor reflected on how getting older has shaped not only his career but also his marriage to human rights lawyer Amal Clooney. One key to their famously drama-free relationship, he says, is wisdom that comes with age.
“When you’re younger, you want to be right about everything,” Clooney explained. “You know, ‘Don’t paint that wall red.’ But Amal and I — and everyone gets mad when I say this — we’ve never had a fight, never had an argument. Some of that is because I’m at a point in life where if she wants to paint the wall red, I don’t care. Why would that even be a discussion or an argument?”
Clooney added that their relationship works so well because of deep mutual support:
“We have a really amazing relationship because we’re so supportive of each other. When I was younger, I don’t think that would’ve been the case. I probably would’ve found things to argue about. Now, it just doesn’t matter.”
True to form, the Ticket to Paradise star sprinkled humor throughout the conversation — even when discussing aging.
“I see parts on my body changing,” he joked. “I’m like, ‘Wait, that fell off? What?!’ Parts have changed significantly, but oh my God…”
He also laughed about the contrast between his and Amal’s workdays:
“Amal was doing an interview with the English Supreme Court about this giant textbook she’s written on the right to a free trial. And I’m in the next room on a Zoom call with Howard Stern going, ‘So tell me about this…’ We have very different lives.”
George and Amal married in 2014 and share 8-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander. The actor went on to praise his wife as not only brilliant and courageous, but also the person who completely transformed his views on marriage and family.
“The truth is, I met this incredible woman,” he said. “Amal is the most extraordinary human I’ve ever met. She’s brilliant, stands up for things that matter, is a force for good, beautiful, funny, and the most extraordinary mother. I can’t tell you how lucky I feel every day. Not being married to her would have been a disaster.”
When asked about parenting, Clooney joked about the future verdict from their kids:
“You’ll have to ask our kids in about 10 years when they’re in therapy saying, ‘Our parents weren’t great.’ We’re present, which is fun. I get to drive them to school most of the time. Amal is such a great mom, and we have very happy kids. We’re just trying to mess them up as little as possible.”
With humor, humility, and heartfelt admiration, George Clooney made it clear: marrying Amal wasn’t just the best decision of his life — it was essential.
