Chapter 2: The Receipt Exposed What Claire And Daniel Had Hidden For Weeks
Rebecca stopped beside my table.
She didn’t say anything at first.
She simply placed the receipt facedown in front of me.
Then she looked across the restaurant.
Claire was still sitting with Daniel.
She had no idea Rebecca was there.
Daniel did.
His face had lost all its color.
I looked at Rebecca.
“Is that the one?”
She nodded.
“The original.”
For six weeks, that piece of paper had been the missing piece.
We already knew about the dinners.
We knew about the Thursday meetings.
We knew their stories had become almost identical.
But none of that proved what they were doing with company money.
The restaurant receipt did.
Rebecca sat across from me.
“Turn it over.”
I did.
The receipt showed the date.
Thursday.
The exact date Claire had told me she was attending a client dinner across town.
Daniel had charged the entire meal to his company account.
But there was something else.
Near the bottom was a handwritten note from the restaurant manager.
I read it twice.
Private room — table for four.
I looked at Rebecca.
“Four?”
She nodded.
“That’s what we were waiting for.”
I looked toward Claire.
She was still talking to Daniel.
Then I noticed the empty chair beside them.
A third place setting had been cleared.
But a fourth glass remained.
Rebecca leaned closer.
“Look at the time.”
The receipt showed 9:46 p.m.
But the credit-card transaction had been processed at 11:18.
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It does if they left the restaurant and came back.”
I looked at her.
“Why would they do that?”
“Because the receipt isn’t the only thing I found.”
She reached into her purse.
This time, she pulled out a folded piece of paper.
It was a copy of Daniel’s company expense report.
I scanned the page.
Several charges had been submitted under “client entertainment.”
The amounts were small enough to look ordinary.
But Rebecca had circled one charge.
$4,860.
I looked up.
“What’s that?”
“A hotel.”
My stomach tightened.
“Which hotel?”
She gave me the name.
I knew it.
It was less than ten minutes from the restaurant.
Rebecca lowered her voice.
“The same night.”
I stared at the document.
Claire had told me she came straight home after dinner.
She had even complained about how exhausted she was.
Suddenly, I remembered something.
She had showered before coming to bed.
At the time, I hadn’t thought anything of it.
Now I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Rebecca watched my expression.
“You’re remembering something.”
I nodded.
“She said she spilled wine on her clothes.”
Rebecca’s eyes narrowed.
“Did she?”
“I don’t know.”
Before we could say anything else, Daniel stood.
He said something to Claire.
She looked toward us.
Her expression changed immediately.
She saw Rebecca.
Then the receipt.
Then me.
She slowly stood.
“Who is she?”
Rebecca answered before I could.
“I’m Daniel’s wife.”
Claire froze.
Daniel walked toward us.
“Rebecca, this isn’t the place.”
She laughed softly.
“You’ve said that before.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“You told me she knew nothing.”
Rebecca turned toward her.
“He told you that?”
Claire didn’t answer.
Rebecca looked at me.
“He told me the same thing about you.”
That silence was enough.
Claire finally walked over.
“Can we please talk privately?”
I looked at her.
“You said you were having dinner with a client.”
She swallowed.
“I was.”
I pointed toward Daniel.
“Is he the client?”
She didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped in.
“She doesn’t owe you an explanation in the middle of a restaurant.”
I smiled.
“That would be convincing if you weren’t married to someone standing right beside me.”
Rebecca’s expression remained calm.
She picked up the receipt.
“There’s more.”
Daniel immediately reached for it.
Rebecca pulled it away.
“No.”
His hand dropped.
“You don’t understand what you’re holding.”
Rebecca smiled.
“Oh, I understand perfectly.”
She placed the receipt on the table.
Then she pointed to the handwritten note.
“Read the last line.”
Claire leaned forward.
Her eyes moved across the paper.
Then she stopped.
I watched her face.
“What does it say?” I asked.
She whispered,
“Four guests.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Exactly.”
Daniel looked furious.
“That’s meaningless.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“Not when we know who the other two were.”
Claire looked at her.
“Who?”
Rebecca reached into her purse again.
She pulled out two photographs.
The first showed Daniel entering the restaurant.
The second showed Claire arriving twenty minutes later.
But neither photograph was surprising.
Then she placed a third photograph on the table.
Claire’s face went white.
The picture showed Daniel and Claire leaving the restaurant through the back entrance.
They weren’t alone.
Two men were walking behind them.
One was carrying a black briefcase.
The other was holding a folder marked with the name of Claire’s company.
I looked at Claire.
“What was in that folder?”
“I don’t know.”
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
“You do.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
She continued.
“You’ve been telling everyone these dinners were about clients.”
Daniel finally spoke.
“They were.”
“Then why were you meeting with someone from the company’s legal department afterward?”
Claire stared at him.
“Legal department?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I was handling a business matter.”
“You never told me that.”
“I didn’t have to.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“You did if you were using company money to pay for it.”
I looked at the expense report again.
The $4,860 hotel charge.
The restaurant.
The private room.
The mysterious fourth guest.
Something wasn’t adding up.
The affair was obvious.
But the financial records suggested something much larger.
I looked at Claire.
“Are you involved in this?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
For the first time that night, I believed her.
Not because I trusted her.
I didn’t.
But because she looked genuinely confused.
Daniel noticed.
He immediately stood between us.
“You’re making a mistake.”
I looked at him.
“What mistake?”
“You think this is about Claire and me.”
I said nothing.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You have no idea what you’re stepping into.”
Rebecca’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked at her.
Then at me.
His expression changed.
He suddenly looked less angry.
More afraid.
“I wasn’t supposed to be here tonight.”
I frowned.
“Then why are you here?”
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked toward the restaurant entrance.
A man in a dark suit had just walked inside.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
His face went pale.
Rebecca whispered,
“Who is that?”
Daniel didn’t respond.
The man walked straight toward our table.
He stopped beside me.
Then placed a sealed envelope in front of me.
“Your wife isn’t the person we’re investigating.”
I looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
The man continued.
“Neither is Daniel.”
Rebecca stood.
“Then who?”
He looked directly at me.
“We’re investigating you.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed me entering a hotel six weeks earlier.
With another woman.
A woman I had never seen before.
Claire looked at the photograph.
Her face went completely blank.
And suddenly, I understood why someone had been trying so hard to make me believe my wife was the only one lying.
