I stared at my husband, unable to speak.
“Who sent it?” I finally asked.
He slid his phone across the table.
There was a message from an unknown number.
Attached was another photograph.
My ex stood outside the hotel.
But this time, he wasn’t alone.
The person beside him was my business partner.
I felt my blood run cold.
“That’s impossible.”
My husband watched me carefully.
“Is it?”
I shook my head.
“He told me he was out of town.”
My husband nodded.
“He told me that too.”
Then he opened another message.
It contained a conversation between my ex and my business partner.
They had been planning something for weeks.
Something involving our company.
Something involving my husband.
I read the final message twice.
My ex had written:
“She still thinks this is about the affair.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What does that mean?”
My husband finally looked away.
“It means you weren’t the target.”
I froze.
“Then who was?”
Before he could answer, someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
My husband didn’t move.
Neither did I.
Then my phone started ringing.
The caller ID showed my sister’s name.
I answered.
Her voice was trembling.
“Don’t open that door.”
I looked toward my husband.
“Why?”
There was a long silence.
