On September 1, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson experienced an unforgettable emotional moment when his latest film — The Smashing Machine — had its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival. The biographical sports drama, directed by Benny Safdie and based on the life of MMA fighter Mark Kerr, received a 15-minute standing ovation.
In a video posted by Variety, the 53-year-old star could be seen wiping away tears as he stood beside co-star Emily Blunt. On the red carpet, the familiar toughness of Hollywood’s action giant faded, revealing a raw vulnerability rarely seen.
“I Don’t Want to Live Other People’s Dreams Anymore”
Ahead of the screening, Johnson spoke at the press conference about why he chose a more artistically driven project instead of continuing with high-grossing blockbusters:
“In Hollywood, it’s easy to get boxed in. People say this is your lane, this is what you do, and this is what audiences expect. I chased the box office for years — some movies were hugely successful, some not so much. But deep inside, I always had this voice asking: What if there’s more? What if I can go deeper?”
Johnson admitted that he used to be afraid of showing raw, unfiltered intensity on screen. But the trust and encouragement from Emily Blunt and director Benny Safdie gave him courage:
“They told me: You can do this. And now I finally feel like I’m living my own dream, not someone else’s.”
Venice’s Embrace
The thunderous applause at Venice was not just a celebration of the film, but also a recognition of Johnson’s bold career shift. Seeing the larger-than-life action star break down in gratitude as the audience stood and cheered symbolized a rare moment of humanity behind the legend.
This year’s festival was filled with emotion. Actor Jacob Elordi also broke down in tears after Frankenstein, the film he stars in, received a 14-minute standing ovation.
A New Chapter for “The Rock”?
From WWE champion to Hollywood’s box office powerhouse, Dwayne Johnson has conquered the world with his strength and positivity. But with The Smashing Machine, he seems determined to reveal another side: an artist who feels pain, fear, and vulnerability — and who dares to explore the darkest corners of the human soul.
Perhaps those 15 minutes of applause in Venice were not only for the film but also for a new Dwayne Johnson — a man who isn’t just smashing opponents in the ring, but also breaking free from the box Hollywood once put him in.
