Brian Shaw: The Unsung Hero Behind the Lakers’ Greatest Comeback and Dynasty
From Celtics Rookie to Lakers Legend—Inside the Journey, Rivalries, and Locker Room Stories That Built a Champion
When fans reminisce about the Lakers’ three-peat glory days, names like Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, and Phil Jackson dominate the conversation. But behind the headlines and highlight reels stands Brian Shaw—a player, coach, and leader whose impact went far beyond the stat sheet.
The Forgotten Game 7 Hero
In the year 2000, the Lakers faced the Portland Trail Blazers in a Game 7 that would become legendary. Down 75-60 in the fourth quarter, the Lakers seemed destined for heartbreak. Enter Brian Shaw. With two clutch three-pointers, Shaw sparked the greatest comeback in NBA playoff history. Even more overlooked was his defense—he held Hall-of-Famer Scottie Pippen to zero points in the final quarter.
“I don’t think I get enough credit for that year,” Shaw admits. “People talk about Shaq and Kobe, but that comeback started with a three in the corner—and I was guarding Pippen the whole fourth.”
Even as Phil Jackson subbed him out in the closing minutes, Shaw’s contribution was undeniable. “At the time, I was pissed,” he laughs. “But I understood later—Phil liked to finish with who he started. Still, I was rolling!”

A Career Built on Adaptability and Leadership
Drafted in 1988 by the Celtics, Shaw’s NBA journey took him through Miami, Orlando, Golden State, Philadelphia, and Portland before finding a home in Los Angeles. He played with legends—Shaq, Penny Hardaway, and Kobe—and won three titles as a player, two more as a coach.

Shaw credits his success to always making the right play. “If they doubled off me, I’d give Shaq two looks. If it came back out, I’d let it fly. It was about trusting the system and your teammates.”
The Shaq & Kobe Dynamic: Fire and Ice
Having played with both Shaq and Penny in Orlando, and Shaq and Kobe in LA, Shaw offers a unique perspective on two of basketball’s greatest duos.
“Penny was a bad boy,” Shaw says, “but he had no problem deferring to Shaq. Kobe? He wasn’t deferring to anybody.” That relentless drive led to both greatness and tension. “Shaq always had to be the biggest, the most. Kobe was determined to be the guy, no matter what.”
Shaw believes if Shaq and Kobe had put aside their differences, their championship count could have soared even higher. “They drove each other, but their chemistry wasn’t always perfect. When the team tried to get younger, it actually got older. That cost Robert Horry and me our spots—and maybe another ring.”
Locker Room Stories: Shaq’s Pranks and Gorilla Encounters
Shaw’s stories from the locker room are the stuff of legend. From Shaq sliding magazines under bathroom stalls (sometimes with an unpleasant surprise) to staring down an albino silverback gorilla at the Philadelphia Zoo, Shaw witnessed—and survived—it all.
“The first time I ever saw Shaq scared was when he looked a gorilla in the eye and it charged the glass,” Shaw laughs. “He said, ‘Damn, he wasn’t lying. He going crazy.’”
Transitioning from Player to Coach
Shaw’s evolution from player to coach was guided by mentors like Frank Hamlin and Phil Jackson. “Frank always told me, ‘You’re going to be a coach.’ He had me doing scouting reports and breaking down film. Phil said, ‘I trust your instincts. If you see something, say it.’”
The transition wasn’t easy. “You work more, get paid less, and your suits get less flashy,” Shaw jokes. But his ability to connect with stars and role players alike made him invaluable on championship staffs.
Legacy and Lessons Learned
Brian Shaw’s journey is proof that championships aren’t just won by superstars—they’re built by chemistry, leadership, and clutch moments. His story is a testament to adaptability, humility, and the power of playing the right role at the right time.
“I’m happy about the role I played in LA,” Shaw reflects. “People here never let you forget it. That comeback—that’s number one for me.”
From clutch threes to gorilla encounters, Brian Shaw’s legacy is woven into the fabric of Lakers history. For more unforgettable stories from the NBA’s golden era, stay tuned and keep chasing greatness.
