I stared at the sender’s name.
My sister.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
My husband turned the laptop toward me.
The email contained three attachments.
Bank statements.
Hotel records.
And a copy of the missing receipt.
My hands suddenly felt cold.
“I can explain,” I whispered.
He shook his head.
“No. You’ve had months to explain.”
I opened the receipt.
My ex’s name was printed clearly at the top.
But underneath it was the name of our company.
And beside it was a payment amount I recognized immediately.
It was money I had secretly transferred.
I looked at my husband.
“You knew?”
“I knew enough.”
Then he opened another file.
It showed messages between my ex and my sister.
They had been talking for months.
But the messages weren’t romantic.
They were about me.
My sister had been warning my husband about everything I was hiding.
Every lie.
Every suspicious transaction.
Every meeting with my ex.
My heart sank.
“So you’ve both been spying on me?”
My husband looked at me quietly.
“No.”
He pointed at the final attachment.
“Your sister was protecting herself.”
I opened it.
It was a statement from the hotel.
My name appeared on the reservation.
But I had never made that reservation.
My ex had.
And suddenly I understood.
Someone had been using my identity.
Someone wanted my husband to believe I was responsible.
Then my husband said something that made everything worse.
“The person who ordered that hotel room wasn’t your ex.”
I looked at him.
“Then who was it?”
He closed the laptop.
“The person who sent us the receipt.”
My stomach dropped.
Because I knew exactly who that person was.
