Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s appearance at the 2025 U.S. Open men’s singles final sparked mixed reactions from the crowd.
On Sunday, September 7, the 79-year-old politician attended the championship match between Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Italy’s Jannik Sinner. During the national anthem, Trump’s image was shown on the jumbotron, and loud boos erupted throughout the stadium, though a few scattered cheers could also be heard.
According to a leaked email obtained by the tennis blog Bounces, the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) had instructed broadcasters ahead of the final to “refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions in response to the former president’s attendance in any capacity.”
Despite the off-court drama, the final ended with Carlos Alcaraz securing a decisive victory, earning his second U.S. Open title. The young Spanish star took home a $5 million prize check and officially reclaimed the world No. 1 ranking from Sinner with this win.
The event not only underscored Alcaraz’s rising dominance in tennis but also highlighted how American politics continues to stir controversy, even in the midst of one of the sport’s most prestigious tournaments.
